Chemical Kinetics

The reactions which are explosive in nature take less than a second to complete. On the other side, rusting of a wrecked airplane take centuries to complete. The word Kinetic is derived from Greek word kinesis meaning Movement. In fact, reactants of all chemical reaction actually move and collide form activated complex which further to form a product.

Must Read: Chemical Reactions.

Two principal reasons to study chemical kinetics.:

Predict the rate of reaction: The different condition that influences the rate of reaction helps to predict the rate of reaction. It has a major impact on the maximum yields of industrial products.

Predict mechanism of reaction: This requires an intelligent guess. It is based on the experimental data which should be consistent. This yield the required product.

What is chemical kinetics?

Chemical Kinetics is the branch of chemistry that deals with the study of the reaction rate. Chemical kinetics also involves the investigation of reaction. It Involves condition of concentration, temperature, pressure, catalyst. These Conditions control the rate of different reaction.

Different reactions proceed with the different speed. The factors that control them are extremely significant. From the industrial point of view, they have a direct influence on cost. For example, the change of diamond to graphite is feasible but the conversion rate is so slow that it is meaningless to study it.

Feasibility in Chemical Kinetics

The feasibility of different reaction can be predicted with the help of thermodynamics.

The reaction with free energy(ΔG) less(<) than zero are feasible.

Similarly, direction with the ΔG more(>) than zero does not take place.

While those with ΔG is equal(=) to zero are in a state of equilibrium.

Factor affecting Chemical Kinetics

The rate of chemical reaction is influenced by the number of factors.

1.The concentration of reactants.

4.Nature of reactant.

5.surface area and

6.Exposure to radiation.

Reaction Behaviour In Chemical kinetics

An increase in the concentration of reactant always produces more product. But it is irrespective of nature of reaction and conditions. Most of the chemical reaction slow at low temperature. It becomes fast on heating. The temperature provides heat energy to reactant species they move and collided at a faster rate and give the product.

The effect of the catalyst is very significant. A catalyst used in chemical reactions for industrial importance. All reactant does not proceed at the same speed. So, we use the concept of activation energy. In presence of radiation photon of light is the source of energy which helps to break the bond so that they react can form a product.
